Falling and Getting Back Up

Two years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that affects my thyroid, known as Hashimoto’s disease. I had success in losing about 140 pounds four years ago, but I fell off the wagon because I wasn’t feeling right. I was fatigued, and I thought it was due to stress because of certain things that were going on in my life at that time. But, I found out it wasn’t just that: it was my thyroid acting up. It caused me to put on about 100 pounds of the 140 that I lost in that time.

Once I got my thyroid levels back into the normal range, I started having a little bit more energy and felt like I could get back to working out again. The trainer I had before reached out to me and said he was starting a new gym and would love to help me get back on track. The gym was called Training for Warriors. We started slowly training just once a week while I started getting my diet back on track. It’s been a year since I saw my thyroid doctor, and I’ve lost 82 pounds.

Training with Targeted Plans

Training for Warriors has an InBody at their facility, and we set a baseline in April with my initial InBody Test. The results were okay, but I like challenges. Little challenges are what keep me going.

When I took my first InBody Test, I got to admit I was a little nervous because it tells you how much fat you have on your body. But I knew I couldn’t let that discourage me because I had a lot of work to do. When the InBody Result Sheet was broken down to me, it wasn’t a scary thing. I got to see the full picture of my muscle and water. So I said, “Okay, I’m going to use that to improve myself.”

Four months later, when they compared my test results I instantly thought, “Wow. I did the work.” I was amazed and the trainers were amazed too. They were like, “Holy moly. That was a big change. You really pushed yourself.” From that point forward, I just wanted to keep pushing myself to see what I am capable of and keep going to make myself better.

Riding the Journey with Success

This weight loss journey has been a continuous learning experience. Last time, it was just about losing weight. I was doing tons of cardio, the weight kept dropping, and I met that goal but I think all that burned my body. This time around, it’s about lifting weights and getting the right nutrition.

This time, I was able to see more success because of the InBody. What InBody does is paints you this whole picture of your health by giving you all the pieces to the puzzle. You know you’re working out and eating right, and the InBody really helps you see what you have accomplished and your current progress. The InBody gives you the full package on your full health.

I train four days a week now. I do two personal and two group workouts at the gym, and occasionally I’ll do things around the house like walking or using my rowing machine at home. I also follow a balanced diet. My family and friends call me Sherry Cotter 2.0 because I’ve made such a great comeback, and it’s just crazy how much different I feel.

Sherry’s Advice

“Thyroid issues are common, and there are things you can do that can help. You can get better. Never give up on yourself, and never settle.”
